William Nylander tied the score at 2–2 for Toronto, sending the game to overtime. In the shootout, he was the only player on the team to convert his attempt.
With 21 games remaining, Toronto sits 13th in the Eastern Conference, seven points behind the final playoff spot. However, Toronto has played two more games than Boston, which currently holds the last spot.
