The student, who is in his early teens, stabbed his art teacher at least three times. He was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of the 60-year-old teacher at the school outside Toulon on the Mediterranean coast.
In recent years, French schools have been plagued by a series of attacks on teachers and students. Last year, two people, a teaching assistant and a student, were killed in two separate knife attacks.
In March last year, schools in the country were allowed to carry out random checks for knives and other weapons in and around schools. Just over a month later, the Ministry of Education stated that nearly 100 knives had been found so far.
