When biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken was found dead, his high-altitude mask was set to a level equivalent to 7,000 meters above sea level, sources tell Norwegian VG.

Sivert Guttorm Bakken was found dead at an altitude of 1,800 meters in his hotel room in Lavazè, Italy, on Tuesday. He was wearing a high-altitude mask.

This has now been seized by Italian police and will be examined in the coming days.

The unconfirmed reports that it was set to 7,000 meters above sea level would mean that the air he was breathing contained very little oxygen. However, it is not clear how the biathlete died or how the high-altitude mask was set.

An autopsy will be performed over the weekend and the results are expected to be ready early next week.

As a result of the death, the Norwegian Olympic Committee is now advising against the use of high-altitude masks.
