The night has been relatively calm, according to authorities in Gironde, where the major fire outside Bordeaux is now in its sixth day.
"The night has been calm, the fire was still stable at six in the morning," said the prefect in Gironde on Tuesday morning.
But after a couple of days of more favourable weather, temperatures are expected to rise and winds to pick up. Météo-France is predicting temperatures of up to 40 degrees in the area on Tuesday.
Yesterday, President Emmanuel Macron visited the fire-ravaged region.
The coming weeks will be tough and we must persevere, he said.
Meanwhile, Le Monde reports that there are several industrial sites with explosive materials in the vicinity of the Gironde fire. The newspaper has identified at least seven industrial sites located less than ten kilometres from the fire. Last week, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said that protective measures would be taken to protect high-risk industries.
In Spain, where the fire in Ávila outside Madrid is the largest the country has ever suffered, the night has also been stable. But a new heatwave is coming across the country, the country's national weather agency warns, with temperatures as high as 42 degrees in parts of the country. About 60,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as a result of the fires, AFP reports.
