Art historian Christophe Leribault, who until now was the director of the Palace of Versailles, will become the new director of the Louvre. The announcement comes after the previous director, Laurence des Cars, resigned on Tuesday following last October's major jewel heist at the museum.
Jewelry worth nearly a billion kronor was stolen in the heist that shook France.
A parliamentary investigation last week found that there were major shortcomings in the Louvre's handling of security even before the jewel heist.
The Ministry of Culture said in a statement that Leribault needs to restore trust in the museum.
