A government statement said the decision to resign was mutual. However, the BBC described it as Wormald being forced out and noted that the resignation followed reports that the government was dissatisfied with how he had handled his duties.
In recent days, Downing Street's communications director Tim Allan and chief of staff Morgan McSweeney have also resigned. McSweeney resigned after the Epstein files revealed that the now-fired ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, had close contacts with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The resignations have been followed by demands both within and outside Starmer's Labour Party that the Prime Minister himself should resign. However, Starmer has dismissed these demands.
