The Coast Guard tells TT that the cable break occurred in the Swedish economic zone and that it is a cable that runs between Germany and Finland that has been damaged.

The suspected cable break is said to have occurred within the Swedish economic zone, and it is therefore the Swedish police who own the case. The preliminary investigation has been classified as sabotage, and we will try to find out what happened, says Mathias Rutegård at the police's national media center to TT.

We are cooperating with the relevant authorities, but basically, we don't have much more to say than that we are investigating a possible cable break, he continues.

According to the police, there is currently no suspect, and they are investigating whether it is a new or old damage.

The company that owns the cable, Cinia, confirms the damage but emphasizes that it is small.

"Data traffic continues as normal. The exact details of the damage are still under investigation," Cinia writes in an email to TT.

According to the Finnish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet, it is the third time in a short period that the cable has been damaged.

Kristersson's comment

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) comments on the event on X:

"I have been aware of the reports in the media about a possible new cable break in the Baltic Sea for some time. The government is being continuously informed by the relevant authorities who are investigating what happened.

We take all reports of possible damage to infrastructure in the Baltic Sea very seriously. As I have said before, they must be seen against the backdrop of the serious security situation that prevails."

The press secretary to Carl-Oskar Bohlin (The Moderate Party), the Minister for Civil Defense, writes in a text message to TT: "The Prime Minister has commented on this on X. We have nothing more to add at present."

Many cable breaks

A number of cable breaks on the bottom of the Baltic Sea have been discovered recently, and several ships have been accused of causing the breaks intentionally. Experts have called the severed cables a hybrid attack. Sweden's Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard (The Moderate Party), has previously stated that the situation is "extremely serious" in connection with the suspected cable sabotage.
