Oliver Ekman-Larsson had to be helped off the ice after getting hurt early in the third period in last night's game against San Jose.
The 34-year-old twisted his left leg – the foot or knee seemed to take the brunt of the blow – after a duel with the opposition's Adam Gaudette behind his own goal. Ekman-Larsson did not look like he could support his leg as he was led out to the locker room.
Toronto coach Craig Berube does not go into detail about exactly what the injury is.
We need to examine it more closely tomorrow to know the exact extent of the injury, Berube said after the game, which San Jose won 3-2, reports TSN.
A heavy message for Toronto, considering the fine form Ekman-Larsson showed during the fall. Potentially heavy for Tre Kronor as well. The former Leksandsbacken is in the running for the Swedish squad for the Olympics in Milan in February.
"I hope it's not something too serious, because he's been playing incredibly well lately. He means a lot to our team," said Toronto captain Auston Matthews.
