Ticket sales for "Avatar: Fire and Ashes" have surpassed $1 billion, The Hollywood Reporter reports. James Cameron's third film in the franchise reached the milestone over the New Year's holiday weekend.

It's another achievement for Cameron, who has already directed three of the four biggest films of all time in the global box-office market, with Avatar at the forefront.

The film cost $350 million to produce and $150 million to market, according to Variety.

There are plans for two more films in the Avatar series, but the director is not entirely sure whether they will be produced.
