Neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque and six others are charged with various offences in connection with Diego Maradona's death in 2020.
Luque says he is innocent of the football legend's death.
"I want to say that I am innocent and that I deeply mourn his death," Luque said in court.
The first trial into Maradona's death had to be suspended and annulled - after judge Julieta Makintach was involved in a documentary about the trial.
The new trial will examine around 120 witnesses and is expected to last until July.
