The 23-year-old suffered a blow to his right hip during a corner kick. It was later confirmed that the Brighton goalkeeper was unable to continue and was replaced by Mark Flekken.
Verbruggen left the field on his own, but limped badly.
The performance in the World Cup qualifier in New York was also hardly something to be happy about. Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead from a penalty in the first half, but in stoppage time Uzbekistan, who are making their World Cup debut this year, were able to level it at 1–1. In the final seconds, however, the Netherlands were awarded another penalty and Gakpo rolled in the winning goal, 2–1.
Before leaving for the USA, "Oranje" took on Algeria in Rotterdam and lost, 0–1.
The Netherlands will play their World Cup opener against Japan on Sunday. Sweden will then face off in Houston on Midsummer's Day.
