"If Iran does not, without threat, fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, the United States will destroy Iran's power plants," he wrote on his own platform Truth Social on Sunday night.
Shortly afterwards, the response came from Iran:
"In line with previous warnings, all energy, information technology and desalination infrastructure belonging to the U.S. and the regime in the region will be targeted if the enemy attacks Iran's fuel and energy infrastructure," the Iranian military said in a statement, according to state media, AFP reports.
Several countries, including Sweden, have said they are willing to help make shipping through the Strait of Hormuz safe, but, according to French President Emmanuel Macron, the security situation must improve first.
Trump has previously hinted that he is considering scaling back the effort against Iran, but shortly afterwards it was confirmed that several U.S. soldiers had been sent to the area.
The war is now in its fourth week and attacks both by and against Iran have continued. On Saturday, more than 100 people were injured in Iranian rocket attacks on southern Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement on Saturday evening that Israel stands firm in its decision to continue attacking Iran.
Overnight, new attacks on Tehran began, according to a post on Telegram from the Israeli military.
According to the Iranian Health Ministry, over 1,500 people have been killed in Iran since the war began, AP reports.
