Israel has carried out its largest airstrike to date and, according to its own information, attacked around 500 targets in Iran.

The goal is to defeat the Iranian regime, and we will succeed in that, Netanyahu claimed in a televised address to the nation.

"This war will lead to peace. Real peace," he said on Saturday evening.

But he said success also depends on the Iranian people rising up against the regime.

"Unite, it's time for you to overthrow the regime. Take to the streets and get it done," Netanyahu said, addressing the Iranians.

He also reiterated the information previously provided by the Israeli military that Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, may have been killed in the attacks.

"There are more and more signs that Khamenei is dead," Netanyahu said.

Iran claims that Ali Khamenei is alive. According to state media, he was due to give a speech in the afternoon, but it was not broadcast.
