Sharvit is thus expected to replace Ronen Bar, whom Netanyahu dismissed earlier in March, as head of the internal security service Shin Bet.
The dismissal of Bar has been disputed. Netanyahu and Bar are said to disagree on who bears the greater responsibility for Hamas' success in carrying out the bloody terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023. The Prime Minister claims to lack confidence in Bar – while Bar asserts that Netanyahu's demands for "personal loyalty" are inappropriate. Last week, Israel's Supreme Court blocked the dismissal, which made Netanyahu furious and claim that it is he who decides – not the court.
The dispute between the Prime Minister and the Supreme Court has been ongoing for a long time, where Israel's current government has wanted to curb the Supreme Court's mandate. Last week, the parliament, the Knesset, finally voted yes to a widely criticized new law that gives the government greater power over the judiciary, which sparked wild protests in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
In recent weeks, thousands of Israelis have also protested against the decision to fire Ronen Bar.
