The accident during an exercise for police employees in Borensberg outside Motala on Thursday is being investigated as causing another person's death. According to information to TT, it was a distraction grenade that caused the death.

In the accident, a man in his 55s died.

The incident is being investigated by the special prosecutor's office, which investigates crimes related to, among other things, police officers. The charge is causing another person's death, says chief prosecutor Joakim Zander, who is the preliminary investigation leader.

No one is currently suspected of a crime. In addition, he cannot tell more about what happened, he says.

The investigation has just begun.

A technical investigation of the site has been conducted and the police have interviewed witnesses.

The death occurred in connection with the police practicing at the Swedish Armed Forces' facility for urban warfare. According to information to TT, it was a so-called distraction grenade that caused the death. The deceased was not employed by the police authority, but participated in the exercise as a volunteer.

Joakim Zander does not want to comment on the information that it should have been a distraction grenade that caused the death.

Distraction grenades are used by, among other things, police officers to disrupt, or distract people, but should normally not cause more serious injuries.

On Friday, the Swedish Armed Forces also announced that they will conduct an investigation after the accident to see what the Swedish Armed Forces can learn from the accident, reports SR Ekot.
