The earthquake caused violent shaking in Tokyo and large parts of the city's traffic were stopped.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.8. There was no subsequent risk of a tsunami.
The majority of those injured are reported to have suffered minor injuries.
