Totally, 279 soldiers attempted to commit suicide during the examined period, reports The Times of Israel.
In the report from the Knesset's research and information center, it is not stated how many soldiers actually took their lives during the same period, but the authors state that for every suicide, an additional seven soldiers attempted to take their lives.
Fighting soldiers accounted for 78 percent of all suicides in Israel in 2024. This means a sharp increase compared to previous years, according to the report. Between 2017 and 2022, suicides among soldiers accounted for between 42 and 45 percent of the total number of suicides in the country.
The Times of Israel writes that the increase can likely be partly linked to the large mobilization to the army after the October 7 attack in 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza.
The report only includes soldiers who were in active service at the time of their suicide or suicide attempt. Veterans who took their lives after completing military service are not included.
