Jason Collins, the NBA's first openly gay player, dies at 47 after eight-month battle with aggressive brain tumor

The basketball star played 13 seasons in the NBA and played for six teams during his career. In 2013, he came out as gay, becoming the first openly gay player in NBA history - which had a major impact both inside and outside the sport.

"Jason changed people's lives in unexpected ways and was a source of inspiration to all who knew him and to those who admired him from afar," Collins' family said in a statement released via the NBA.
