It was on Sunday morning that Don Nelson's family announced that he had died.

"On Sunday morning, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather Don Nelson peacefully passed away to be with God, surrounded by his loving family," the family wrote in a statement.

He won major titles as a player, a total of five NBA championships during his years with the Boston Celtics.

But it was coaching that gave Don Nelson legendary status, even though he never managed to make it all the way to an NBA title. His coaching career spanned from 1976 to 2010, and he led Milwaukee, Golden State, New York and Dallas.

He was named coach of the year three times and helped shape great players such as Steve Nash, Stephen Curry and Dirk Nowitzki.
