Three of the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny's lawyers have been sentenced to prison by a court in Russia.

Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin, and Aleksej Lipster were arrested in October 2023, accused of "extremism". Among other things, the lawyers are said to have forwarded letters from the then imprisoned Navalny to the staff of his anti-corruption movement – which in turn is classified as an extremist group by Russian authorities.

They are now facing between three and a half and five and a half years in prison, according to the independent Russian news site Mediazona.

Putin critic Navalny was sentenced to over 30 years in prison for extremism. He died under unclear circumstances in a penal colony in Russia almost a year ago.
