Information provided to the Reuters news agency says an internal email from the US Department of Defense outlined ways to punish European NATO countries that did not help during the US war against Iran. Reevaluating the view on Britain's right to the Falkland Islands is one thing. Shutting out Spain is another.

However, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is not worried.

"We do not work based on emails. We work based on official documents and positions taken, in this case by the US government," Sánchez says on his way to the EU summit in Nicosia.

Spain does not believe that criticism of the US's actions regarding Iran has anything to do with NATO cooperation.

"We are a trusted member," Sánchez says.
