After 90 played minutes, the match was 2–2, so thereafter it became an extension and finally penalties.
After Spain's Álvaro Morata missed his penalty – and Portugal got all theirs in – it was clear that Portugal takes home the victory. Portugal also won the first final in the Nations League in 2019.
The leading goal was the one Martin Zubimendi scored for Spain after 20 minutes, but Portugal responded immediately when Nuno Mendes pressed in a shot in the far post.
Shortly before the half-time break, Mikel Oyarzabal sent in the 2–1 goal.
But it's never possible to count out Cristiano Ronaldo. The 40-year-old's 138th national team goal meant 2–2 after an hour of play. The veteran's goal was also the eighth in the tournament, one less than Viktor Gyökeres' nine goals for Sweden.
Earlier on Sunday, France secured third place by beating Germany in Stuttgart with 2–0. Kylian Mbappé and Michael Olise scored the goals.
