Hjalmarsson has had a trial contract with Toronto Sceptres during the preseason and on Friday night the club announced that the Swedish forward has signed a one-year contract.
She will be one of five Swedes in the PWHL this season.
Olympic-cap Hjalmarsson was named Player of the Year in Sweden last season and has played in six World Cup tournaments and two Olympics.
Before the trial with Toronto, she had high hopes of getting a place and told TT:
This was something you dreamed about as a child.
The PWHL, called the women's NHL, starts this weekend and Toronto plays on Saturday night when the team meets Minnesota, who won the championship title in both of the opening two seasons, on the road.
