The football team is on just one point in the World Championship qualifying round after two matches played out of a total of six. Above all, the 0-2 loss away to Kosovo was a low point, which made the comment fields on the national team's Instagram account boil over.
A while after the loss on Monday evening, it was no longer possible to comment on the social media platform because the association did not have staff on duty to moderate the posts.
"The situation is tough"
Now the national team is speaking out in a brief open letter addressed to its supporters.
"We are all disappointed. The start of the World Championship qualifying round did not live up to expectations. We know that the situation is tough. We know that the remaining matches will be decisive. But we also know that we have recovered before. Together", it says.
This is exemplified by the 0-0 match away to Italy at San Siro in Milan in November 2017 when Sweden qualified for the World Championship 2018. As well as the recovery against Germany in Berlin in 2012 when 0-4 became 4-4 in the World Championship qualifying round. Blågult then finished second and missed the World Championship 2014 after losing to Portugal in the playoff.
"The road is steep, but hope makes it possible", the national team writes in the post and extends thanks to the supporters.
Late equalizing goal
In Friday's World Championship premiere away to Slovenia, Sweden conceded an equalizing goal in the 90th minute in the match that ended 2-2.
Sweden will next face Switzerland in Solna on October 10, before Kosovo awaits on October 13 in Gothenburg. On November 15, the team will face Switzerland away before the World Championship qualifying round ends on November 18 at home against Slovenia.
The top team in the group will qualify directly for the World Championship in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next year. The second-place team will play a playoff.
