People who refused to leave the protests began to be arrested shortly after the curfew came into effect, CNN reports.
"These groups are being dealt with and mass arrests are beginning," Los Angeles police wrote on X.
Parts of central Los Angeles have been covered by a curfew since the night before Wednesday, according to Mayor Karen Bass. The measure aims to stop vandalism and looting.
According to Bass, "the cup had run over" since a dozen businesses were looted during the protests, which are directed against the ICE agency's tightened raids on residents, mainly in Latin-dominant areas. At the same time, Bass accuses the Trump administration of targeting families and children in the raids – instead of violent criminals and gang members.
Expanded powers
Since last Saturday, a total of 378 people have been detained in connection with the sometimes violent protests, the police announced earlier. 197 of them were arrested by CNN on Tuesday.
President Trump has called in around 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to Los Angeles. On Tuesday, the National Guard received expanded powers: in addition to guarding federal buildings, they will now also protect ICE personnel during raids on migrants lacking proper documentation.
Newsom accuses Trump of behaving like a dictator.
Other states are next. Democracy is next. Democracy is under attack right in front of our eyes. The moment we have feared is here, he said on Tuesday evening.
Protests in more cities
When Trump spoke at the Fort Bragg military base in North Carolina on Tuesday, he focused on the "anarchy" in Los Angeles.
We will not allow an American city to be invaded and conquered by a foreign enemy, he said, and falsely claimed that the protests are led by "paid rioters" from other countries.
According to Trump, the government will use "all available means" to "restore law and order."
Over the past day, the protests have spread to more cities. In addition to New York, Chicago, and the Texas cities of Dallas and Austin, large demonstrations have been held.
In New York, the protests drew several thousand people on Tuesday, according to the AP news agency. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has called in the National Guard ahead of this week's continued protests.
