The work to combat the problem is marked by "lack of efficiency and inadequate conditions," according to the Swedish National Audit Office's review. Among other things, there is no coherent strategy to reduce the prevalence of illegal firearms in Sweden.
The ability of the police and customs to compile, analyse and share information is also lacking. This makes it difficult to establish a common situational picture, which is necessary to direct efforts towards the right flows, places and actors where the risk of smuggling and handling is high.
The audit also believes that the national firearms centre, created in 2023, lacks the basic conditions needed to achieve the right results.
