American junior hockey star Cole Hutson was hit by a gunshot to the back of the head during the Junior World Championship (JVM) match against Switzerland and was taken to hospital.

In the second period of last night's game, which the USA won 2–1, Cole Hutson fell to the ice after being hit in the back of the head by a shot from Frölunda defender Gian Meier.

"It was terrible to see," says teammate Cole Eiserman, according to Aftonbladet.

The 19-year-old was left lying on the ice before being taken out on a stretcher and transported to the hospital.

The United States Ice Hockey Association later issued a statement regarding Hutson's condition:

"Hutson has been released from the hospital and is back with the team. It's 'day-by-day'," the association writes about Hutson's injury.
