At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average had fallen 0.4 percent, while the broad S&P 500 hovered around zero and the tech-heavy Nasdaq reached its highest level ever after gaining 0.5 percent.
The relatively small movements may partly be related to investors' concerns about President Donald Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, where he said he was facing a "big decision" regarding Iran.
The choice, Trump claimed, is whether to make a deal with the regime or “destroy the Islamic Republic.”
It is clear that the oil price is currently continuing to move downwards; at 10 p.m., a barrel of North Sea oil (Brent) costs just over $98.
