The spectators around the Simonne-Mathieu court gasped at the outfit Osaka wore over her gold-colored competition suit.
"We athletes are in the entertainment industry. When I enter the court, that's the only time I possibly feel like an entertainer," Osaka said after her first match, according to the AP.
The four-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one, ranked 16th in the world, does not consider the clay in Paris her favorite surface, but the 7–6 (7–1), 6–4 victory over Donna Vekic puts her into the third round.
It is the best result for the 28-year-old at Roland Garros.
