However, last week the junta allowed the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to meet with 81-year-old Suu Kyi.

It was the first time she had been allowed contact with an independent international organization since she was detained five years ago, and the visit can be seen as an attempt by Myanmar to deflect criticism.

But the request for release was denied.

"Although the government has commuted her sentence on humanitarian grounds, the question of a full and unconditional release should only be considered in accordance with the law," reads a statement from the country's Foreign Ministry.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the 1991 Peace Prize laureate, has been detained since the junta overthrew her government in a coup in 2021.
