Min Aung Hlaing has received at least half of the votes in an election controlled by the junta he leads, AFP reports.
In the country's much-criticized elections held in December 2025 and January this year, the pro-military Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won more than 80 percent of the vote. Criticism of the election was banned and voting was halted in areas controlled by groups challenging the military takeover.
The election has been condemned internationally as an attempt to legitimize military rule five years after the coup against Aung San Suu Kyi.
