Myanmar airstrike on market in western Myanmar kills at least 33, separatists say

The information about the attacks comes from the separatist movement Arakan Army (AA), which says that an important bridge in the city of Kyauktaw was attacked, in addition to the market.

The attacks were carried out in the middle of the day in the Rakhine region (formerly Arakan), one of the most vulnerable and conflict-affected states in Myanmar since the military seized power in a 2021 coup.

The AA militia group, which is fighting the central government, controls large parts of the state, while the military junta controls some cities. The conflict has forced around half a million residents to flee their homes.

The civil war has been ongoing since 2021, when Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government was ousted. Around 100,000 people have died in the conflict.
