The airstrikes were carried out on Friday morning against the town of Swel le Oh, about 70 kilometers west of Myanmar's second-largest city, Mandalay. The information comes from a spokesman for a local opposition security organization. Another 20 people were injured when the Buddhist site was bombed in two waves of attacks.
A week-long meditation camp was under way at the time of the attack.
The military junta in Myanmar carries out recurring air raids against areas where opposition groups are engaged in armed struggle or civil disobedience against the regime - often resulting in many civilian casualties.
Few independent observers can access vulnerable areas, which makes monitoring difficult.
