Eight of the activists have been sentenced to 37 years in prison and one to 27 years in prison. They gathered at a protest in central Mandalay to, among other things, urge people to abolish the conscription law and boycott the election, which was also condemned internationally.

The ruling military junta has not commented publicly on the verdicts.

Around 32,000 people have been arrested since the 2021 military coup and more than 14,000 have been imprisoned, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners group.
