Grok – who answers user questions on billionaire Musk's platform X – stated in a post on Monday in French that the gas chambers at the Auschwitz death camp were "designed for disinfection with Zyklon B against typhus, with ventilation systems suited to this purpose rather than for mass executions."
The post was still visible on X at 6 p.m. on Wednesday and had millions of views, according to AFP.
The French prosecutor's office's cybercrime unit is now expanding an ongoing investigation into X to include Grok's behavior. The X investigation focuses on whether algorithms facilitated "foreign influence" on the platform.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum comments on the matter in a post on X.
"We would like to remind Grok that Holocaust denial violates the rules at X," the museum writes.
The chatbot Grok has been in the news in the past, criticized for spreading disinformation and anti-Semitism. For example, Grok has praised Adolf Hitler and called himself “MechaHitler.”
