USAID's two highest security officials have been dismissed after refusing to hand over secret documents to Elon Musk's White House unit Doge.
They refused, according to reports from news agency AP, to hand over the documents as Doge employees lacked the necessary security clearance.
Musk's department, whose task is to streamline the government apparatus, gained access to the documents on Saturday.
After the information became known, Musk wrote on X that "USAID is a criminal organization, it's time for it to die".
USAID's website and X account were both shut down over the weekend.
The aid organization has a budget of 42.8 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 480 billion kronor, intended for humanitarian aid.
The information comes days after Doge is said to have requested – and received – classified documents from the finance department.
Doge, and by extension Musk, are then said to have gained full access to the department's information, including confidential information about companies that compete with Musk's own.
