“For those who don't know, SpaceX has already shifted its focus to building a self-sustaining city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than ten years, while Mars would take over 20 years,” Musk writes on X.
One difficulty with reaching Mars, according to Musk, is that it is only possible to travel there every 26 months when the planets are aligned.
“We can launch to the Moon every ten days,” Musk writes.
In an executive order on American space policy last year, Trump announced that he wants to send Americans to the Moon by 2028 as part of NASA's Artemis program, of which SpaceX is a contractor.
