On January 16, the Ystad District Court found the man guilty of murdering an 80-year-old man in Skurup municipality in September last year. He was remanded in custody pending a forensic psychiatric examination before a sentence was determined, and the following night he was found dead.
The police have now received a preliminary report on the cause of death after new samples were taken in connection with the forensic examination, writes Ystads Allehanda.
"It was an accident. That's where we've landed," Malin Rosén, head of the police department for serious crimes in Ystad, told the newspaper.
Rosén notes that there is nothing to indicate that the man committed suicide.
