Municipal Delays Impact Farm Alcohol Sales as Permits Begin

Minister for Social Affairs Jakob Forssmed (CD) criticizes "extreme" differences between municipalities' fees and processing times. It is not reasonable for a task that is largely standardized.

On Sunday, the green light will be given for farm sales of alcoholic beverages. Despite this, producers in certain municipalities may have to wait until autumn for permits, while others promise a lightning-fast process. Some charge a fee of 3,000 kronor – others close to 19,000.

It was difficult to imagine that it would be such extreme differences for a relatively limited effort from the municipalities' side, says Jakob Forssmed.

The decision was passed by the Riksdag at the end of April. The Public Health Agency's guidelines came three weeks ago. Poor planning, some argue, but according to the Minister of Health, it is the "sleepy" municipalities that have not done their part to prepare.

We presented the basics a year ago precisely so that there would be time to plan.

Many of the producers already have permits today, for example, for serving and selling alcohol, he stresses.

They have not suddenly popped up now, but are in most cases known and established businesses in the municipalities.

A reasonable processing time would be, according to Forssmed, a few weeks. What would be a reasonable cost, he does not want to get into.
