At least three people have been killed in a Russian attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv early on Saturday morning.

Explosions occurred in the city a short while after the Ukrainian air force had warned of attacks with ballistic missiles and drones in several parts of the country.

Images from the impact site in Kyiv – an intersection in a densely populated area – show how the facade of a large multi-story building has been completely destroyed. On the ground floor, the burnt-out remains of a fast-food restaurant can be seen.

In an early stage, four deaths were reported, but this was later revised to three.

Russia's military claims that the attack was directed at a military target, a robotics manufacturer, and states that it should be seen as revenge after Ukrainian attacks with American Atacms missiles against Russia.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha calls the attack despicable and says it shows that Russia's President Vladimir Putin does not want peace.

A main water pipe is also said to have been damaged in the attack. Windows to residential buildings have been blown out and an entrance to a subway station has been damaged, according to the state rescue service. The affected train station, Lukjanivska, has been closed and trains are passing through without stopping.
