Multiple Collisions in Snow Chaos – 120 People to Hospital

Around 120 people have been taken to hospital after multiple crashes involving over 100 vehicles in the snow chaos on E4 and E18. It was like a dystopian film scene, says police spokesperson Stefan Larsson about one of the multiple crashes.

The pressure on healthcare was extremely high after Saturday's two major accidents.

After the incident in the Enköping area, 106 people have been transported to healthcare for assessment, says Mikael Köhler, health and healthcare director in Region Uppsala.

He has no further details on the injury situation, but says that two people are in intensive care. Their condition is stable.

From the first accident, which occurred north of Uppsala, 13 people were taken to Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala with minor injuries, said Ulla Olsson Strömberg, chief physician on duty, to SVT News Uppsala earlier in the day.

Most patients were taken to Akademiska Hospital or Enköping Hospital. Patients were also taken to the hospital in Västerås, according to Region Västmanland.

In addition, hospitals in Region Stockholm received four patients, reports P4 Stockholm.

Nearly 100 vehicles

Just before 12 pm on Saturday, an alarm was raised about a large number of vehicles involved in an accident on E18 at Grillby between Enköping and Bålsta. The police have flown drones over the accident site and count 95 involved vehicles.

There were a lot of vehicles standing all over the place. I've never seen anything like it in real life, says Stefan Larsson about the drone images from the accident site.

The road section is closed. The earliest estimate is that it will open towards Västerås at midnight, according to the Swedish Transport Administration. In the direction of Stockholm, the goal is to resume traffic at 6 pm.

In the accident north of Uppsala at 10 am, about ten vehicles crashed on E4.

"A big pile"

According to the police, both passenger cars and trucks were involved in the multi-vehicle accident on E18.

When it comes to a standstill on the motorway and there is a lot of traffic coming at high speed and not being able to stop their vehicles, it becomes a reverse ketchup effect. People drive into each other and it becomes a big pile before you can stop all the cars, says Stefan Larsson.

He urges motorists stuck in the queues after the accident on E18 to be patient.

A large number of these vehicles will need to be towed. It's both trucks and passenger cars, so it's going to be very, very strained and difficult.

Another accident also occurred at Villingsberg in the Karlskoga area, where two motorists collided at a traffic jam. One person has been taken to hospital with unclear injuries.
