More than 8,000 patients have been evacuated from Gaza since the outbreak of the war in October 2023, according to the World Health Organization. More than 16,500 patients still need treatment outside the Palestinian territory. According to Isleem, the real number is actually much higher, as only patients registered as needing evacuation are counted.
Our estimate is that it is three to four times that figure, he says.
So far, over 30 countries have received patients from Gaza, but only a few have received large numbers of patients. These include countries such as Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. In Europe, for example, Italy has received more than 200 patients, while countries such as France and Germany have not received any patients.
