As proposed in a legislative bill, the option for asylum seekers to obtain permanent residence permits would be removed. Temporary residence permits would instead be the norm.
Under current rules, people in need of protection are initially granted only temporary residence permits. However, after a certain period, they may still be granted permanent permits.
The proposal applies to anyone who is a refugee, is in need of alternative protection, or is resettled in Sweden.
The option would also be removed for people granted a residence permit because of particularly distressing circumstances, and for those who cannot be deported because of so-called obstacles to enforcement or because of family ties.
