Coach icon José Mourinho has been fired. Fenerbahce failed to get past Benfica in the Champions League qualifying match on Wednesday and now the Portuguese must leave the club.

"We have gone separate ways with José Mourinho", says the club in a statement.

Mourinho took over the main responsibility in Fenerbahce in July last year and has previously been suspended for one match after criticizing Turkish football and match delegates.

The 62-year-old has over the years coached major clubs such as Real Madrid, Inter, Roma, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United. He has won two Champions League titles and a number of league titles.
