The obituary was posted by Campbell's children on social media.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Philip Anthony Campbell, who passed away peacefully last night after a long and brave fight in the intensive care unit following a complicated surgery," his children, Todd, Dane and Tyla, wrote.

Phil Campbell was born in 1961 in Wales and played in Motörhead from 1984 until the death of frontman Lemmy Kilmister in 2015, when the band disbanded. From 1992, he played alongside Swedish drummer Mikkey Dee in the band.

Dee received the news with sadness, he told Aftonbladet.

Campbell was the class clown in a positive way. Incredibly funny and a nice guy. He was really my brother and we had so much fun for so many years. He was born to entertain others. It was madness at the highest level all the time, he told the newspaper.

A true rocker, true musician, true family man. He was true in every way, Mikkey Dee continued.
