A seven-year-old girl was taken to hospital with a bleeding abdomen, and her family claimed she had been in a bicycle accident. Now her mother is being sentenced to prison.

The crime is classified as aggravated assault, and the penalty is three years and three months in prison. However, the girl's father and another person were acquitted.

The incident came to light in July 2022, when the girl was admitted to hospital with bleeding wounds to her genitals after what was described as a cycling accident. Doctors suspected that the girl had been subjected to genital mutilation. The girl's parents were later arrested, and charges were also brought against a third person.

Nyköping District Court finds that someone cut the girl's genitals, and rules out that it was caused by a bicycle accident. The court writes that "there is a lot of evidence" that the girl was subjected to genital mutilation, even though it cannot be confirmed.

It is also not possible to determine who performed the procedure, but the court believes that the mother must have known that the procedure would take place and that she was guilty of a crime by not protecting the girl.
