In Japan, the Nikkei was up 0.9 percent at lunchtime while the Topix rose 0.3 percent.
In China, Shanghai is unchanged while Shenzhen drops by 0.6 percent.
The Hang Seng in Hong Kong, on the other hand, is up 0.6 percent.
South Korea's Kospi rises sharply by 3.0 percent.
