Of the 163,000, over a third, around 62,000, have become Swedish citizens. In addition, 39,000 people have temporary or permanent residence permits, which allow them to stay, for example, while waiting for citizenship if they have applied for it.

Around a quarter of the total number who arrived – 38,000 people – are registered as having left and are supposed to have left Sweden.

But 13,000 more are categorized as having absconded. This means that they may have left the country or that they are still here, but they have not notified the Migration Agency of their whereabouts.
