A 23-year-old man from southern Sweden has been sentenced to three years and three months in prison for several terrorist crimes, Attunda District Court announced.

The man is convicted of participation in a terrorist organization, several counts of financing terrorism and attempted financing, and two counts of traveling for terrorism.

"The district court has found that all of the accused acts had a connection to IS as a terrorist organization and that the man had the intent required for liability under the Terrorist Offences Act," says Johan Nordin, councilor and chairman of the court, in a press release.

According to the indictment, the man is alleged to have used cryptocurrency to transfer money to IS and has made two trips with the aim of joining IS in Somalia.

The man's childhood friend and fellow traveler became the first person in Sweden to be convicted of participating in a terrorist organization in February of this year. He was sentenced to three years and three months in prison for the same types of terrorist crimes that the 23-year-old is now being convicted of.

The new terrorism law came into force on June 1, 2023. The intention is to be able to punish actions aimed at "strengthening, promoting or supporting" a terrorist organization.
