Armed violence is no longer limited to certain conflict zones but is now also affecting areas that were previously places of refuge.

The violence is no longer contained; it is expanding, Gregoire Goodstein, head of the UN mission in Haiti, said at a press conference in Geneva.

Goodstein warns that aid efforts will soon run out of resources.

Haiti, in the Caribbean, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, has been suffering for several years from a humanitarian crisis fueled by violence. Armed gangs control large parts of the country. Murder, rape, looting, and kidnappings are commonplace.

The number of internally displaced persons amounts to about 12 percent of the country's roughly 12 million inhabitants.
